1985 38 Explorer (3888)
My wife and I bought this boat in 1994, so we have owned it going on 24 years. It has always been serviced by a professional mechanic.
Oil, fuel, coolant fluids and filters were changed every year.It was berthed undercover except for an occasional trip to the Bay.Over the time we have owned it, I have added, changed, taken off, varnished, and exchanged until it has become a very civilized Boat… Easy to run and maintain.
38’ Length, 13.6’ Beam, semi displacement hull with flybridge… Salon, lower helm station, full galley, 2 staterooms, and 2 heads.
The hull was fitted with tunnel extensions in the first year we owned it.This allows for a
faster planing time and a reduced wake (What I just said is relative… this is not a ski boat).
far as blisters go, she has been very kind to us.
I won’t say it never had any at all, but nothing
that kept it out of the water. The boat yard just takes care of it and we’re back in the water…
Maximum dry dock time 5 days (including lift and splash).
The transmissions are Borg Warner Velvet-drives (quiet).
I had the props pulled about 4
years ago and sent to the prop shop.
They should be good to go.
The shaft seals were replaced
with PSS dripless seal (very nice).
No adjustment was necessary, just a visual inspection.
There is a door to the engine room from the cockpit, so you can then step into it and
service both motors.
There is also a hatch in the salon that lifts up and exposes more of the
There are 2-6 cylinder 130 HP Diesel motors.
They are Mitsubishi, by US Marine
They are tractor motors that work in tractors, busses, trucks and ..Boats.
There is an Onan 8KW Gen set. that works fine.
Also in the engine compartment are 6-6 volt AGM Deep Cycle Batteries, maintained by a
Magnum Brand 3000 AMP Inverter/Smart charger combination, with digital control at the lower
helm station. (Very,Very Nice)
There is an anchor and windless which accommodates chain and rope.
I removed the
top safety cable and replaced it with a stainless hand rail.
You can walk around this boat safely.
The cockpit is fully enclosed with canvas and Isinglass and is carpeted.
All is in good
Going inside, the settee (good upholstery) is to the left and there is a Hi-Low table that
actually lowers to make a 3rd sleeping area.
On the right is a Wet Bar area with a sink, ice
maker and storage.
The Helm Station is on the starboard side with a Helm Chair that matches the settee
Stepping down into the Galley, you find a 3 burner electric stove with oven, a microwave,
counter space, a double sink, and a refrigerator with freezer.
The salon, master bedroom and guest room are all carpeted and in very good shape.
There was a new fresh water Tank installed a couple of years ago.
Because of this, the stairs
down to the galley, the companion way up to the Master Bedroom, and the galley is now new
Teak and Holly.
This makes the galley look larger and looks very attractive.
There are 2 Marine Airr reverse cycle heat/air conditioners.
The one in the salon is
16,000BTU and blows heat/air into the salon and galley.
The one in the master bedroom is
14,000BTU and is quite adequate. They are both operated by digital controls, just like home.
guest head opens to a shower and bathtub.
The Master Bedroom has its own head and sink.
There is a Purasan Coast Guard approved Sanitation Station on board for both heads that are
operated with very slick buttons… Soft close seats as well.
Climbing up the ladder brings you to the Flybridge.
The first thing we did when we
bought the boat was to add a Hardtop over the cockpit.
We chose the heavy duty one for added
Then we moved the starboard settee all the way back as far as it could go, added
matching helm and nav chairs, carpeted the floor and enclosed the whole bridge with canvas
No matter what the weather, you’re all set.
